personality:

Isaac's main drive is his want to be a part of something. Coming from a background with an abusive father and no mother, it left him mostly secluded. When Derek offered him the bite to become a werewolf, he jumped at the chance. Not only did it make him more powerful, able to stand up to the bully in his life, but it made him a part of a gang that Derek was creating.

He also became a part of Scott's pack as well. He is a student with most of them, and while he does have allegiances to Derek, he also realizes that Scott wants to help. Ultimately loyalty is another motivator. He sticks with Derek even when things get dangerous because that's what he has. It literally took Derek trying to throw a bottle at him to make him leave (though in the next episode he still appears at the fight with Cali versus Derek).

He isn't just for himself, and when he moves in with Scott and his mother, she becomes important to him as well. He wants to be a good person, seeing what Scott does, though at first he certainly wanted to be a better werewolf, stronger and faster with the ability to control his changing during the full moon, but after the second season, he sticks to those close to him.

It even is hard to let Allison in, but she is a part of Team Scott. She proves that she isn't the person that tried to kill him. He also does have some panic triggers from his abuse, mostly stemming from claustrophobia, but he has a definite fear of small, dark places. It can actually get him to turn, his fear is that great.

Not everything is so painful for him though. His greatest happiness did lie in his childhood. He was able to use those feelings to become stronger which suggested that as a child things were not always so bad. However he was quite the opposite when Derek had found him.

Isaac is also a beta. This means that he is basically trained to be there and be loyal, but he doesn't have quite the skills to be an alpha. Derek isn't the best alpha, but he is far more equipped to lead than Isaac is. He follows orders, does what he's told.

The second season shows that growth in him. He gains much more confidence as do the other teenagers that were turned. They are powerful and attractive, and Isaac does know how to use that (though Erica is certainly the one that uses it to her advantage far more). That power is what makes them follow Derek, his loyalty. Even though it almost meant killing an innocent girl.

It's the events at the end of season two, when the others leave, and seeing more people die. At his heart he is a good person, but he can be swayed certainly with his want to be belonged and the power that has now come with being a werewolf.
